Jasper,

Rose quoted the passage that I was thinking of (Thank you, Rose).

"Kato told them he’d spent the night at home and made a few phone calls. Later on (in what may prove to be a major victory for the defense’s theory of a police conspiracy), he told me he could not clearly remember who first brought up the thumping on the walls. According to Kato, he was going to insist on his rights, but didn’t because he felt he had nothing to hide. He asked what was going on, and claims not to remember saying anything about the noises behind the house to Detective Fuhrman"

You have to keep in mind that Elliot believed that O.J. was guilty, so that any comment of his about "major victory for the defence", he would not have let out easily. So I believe Elliot told it as he heard it from Kato.
