I'm in. I happened to watch a documentary about child developement just moments before I read your post. One segment showed experiments they did with three year olds about how they handled cheating and lying. The kids were told not to peek at a toy behind their backs and were then left alone for a moment. 70% of the kids peeked and then when asked about it they all lied about it. At three they had just learned that they could lie to stay out of trouble. The interesting part was that those 70% were the kids with the higher IQ.
I agree with you that all the lies in the Simpson case originated with fuhrman, the eternal liar. He convinced them all about his scenario and then left them lying about it to save their own skin and what was left of the case.
Take Clark, she was really impressed with fuhrman, "who seemed most thoroughly familiar with the facts of the case". Fuhrman must be a brilliant and compelling liar. Remember the tapes where he bragged about being the third or fourth car on a scene and being the one who ended up testifying.
The whole Grand Jury hearing was based on fuhrman's lies, his script. He was subpoenad to appear (Pg. 93) but then they shut it down. Then up popped the 911 tape and fuhrman was on track again.
It's not in the DA's nature to back off and say sorry, we were wrong. They had O.J. in jail and the show had to go on, so I think they all just continued with the lies, too committed to the case. Yet, Clark says over and over in her book that she knew they couldn't win. "The prospect of a bitterly fought trial we knew we couldn't win was just too much to bear." (Pg. 193) "I realized, I guess we all did, that we were taking this battering in the service of a lost cause." (Pg.360) And so on and so on.
That to me is the worst lie, when you don't have the courage to admit you were wrong and instead accept lies to cover your mistakes. And I believe that police officers and detectives do it all the time, out of lazyness and because they are so used to it. And that their mamas didn't tell them when they were three that it is not right thing to do.
