Are we talking about two people, you wrote. After I read fuhrman's book I started thinking of fuhrman/Roberts as the Siamese twins or Roberts as fuhrman's imaginary friend. Fuhrman wrote "me and Brad", "Brad and I" or "Brad and me" in every paragraph. Didn't do a thing without his shadow.
What we have to remember is that Roberts didn't exist in any of the trials. He was hardly mentioned by name. Before fuhrman's testimony in the criminal trial, Clark asked him to make a list of cops that "could help score up his credibility." When she saw Robert's name on the list she "just shook my head and said to myself, He Just Doesn't Get It." then she goes on to minimize Robert's presence and what he could testify to.
On September 26 the defence asked the four detectives, Vanatter, Lange, Phillips and fuhrman for hair samples and that evening they had a group meeting. In the endnotes of Evidence dismissed about the meeting it says: "It should be noted that at the time of this goup meeting among the four detectives, all of them had already testified under oath before the grand jury and during the preliminary hearing. In subsequent testimony at the criminal trial, the detectives - with the exception of Fuhrman - were consistent with their previous sworn statements. In other words, nothing said during this group meeting or any other meeting altered or influenced what they would later say under oath at the criminal trial."
The truth is that fuhrman and Phillips didn't testify before the grand jury, and that phillips didn't testify in the preliminary hearing either. That leaves Vanatter and Lange. Why did they lie about this?
I think Phillips was the chosen liar because he hadn't testified before, and thus couldn't perjure himself on the stand.
On Pg.228 just after they mention the group meeting, they write another peculiar paragraph. "Immediately, other police officers, seeing how those with a badge are now being bludgeoned, begin to shy away from the Simpson case. One LAPD detective - from a division other than RHD - is so intimidated by what's going on that he balks at any suggestion of testifying, even though he has already gathered some general backgroud information for the case. In fact he fears the potential consequences, real or imagined, that might result if anyone even knows that he has been involved in the Simpson investigation."
Are they taking about Brad Roberts?
Then what is there in Roberts closet that makes him so fearful of exposure and the other detectives so willing to hide him and even take a fall for him. Especially Phillips, who is his supervisor.
