Your astute questions point up the fact that the entire exchange that Phillips testified to was a sham to cover Fuhrman’s knowledge of exactly were the Rockingham estate was.
I’m not just talking abut visits that he might have made there as a “buddy” of Ron Shipp to play tennis on O.J.’s court or to moonlight as a security guard at the pizza party Nicole gave there a month or so earlier. I’m talking about Steven Singular’s allegation that Fuhrman and another detective left Bundy and went to Rockingham at about 2:30 to see if they could find incriminating evidence but argued and left when they couldn’t.
It was about this time (2:35) that Commander Bushey ordered Phillips to make the death notification to O.J. Simpson. Roberts was with Fuhrman by then and the timing certainly fits Bushey’s order as well as Singular’s allegation. I also makes Phillips a party to an agreement not to tell Vannatter and Lange that Fuhrman and Phillips had scouted the area long before they arrived.
Fuhrman called Phillips’ attention to Kato, although Lange was the only one who said so in his court testimony. This is from Vannatter and Lange’s Evidence Dismissed (page 21): At the first door, Fuhrman looks in a window and tells the others, “It looks like there’s somebody inside.” Phillips then pounds hard on the door.
In Murder in Brentwood (page 30) Fuhrman says: As we turned into the pool area, I could see three bungalows on the south side of the property. Ron approached the first bungalow’s glass French door and looked inside. He turned back toward us and said, “There’s someone on the bed.”
Vannatter’s testimony that he saw Phillips knock on the door AND THEN say that he saw somebody inside is not out of line with Lang’s. Vannatter was last in line. From his previous testimony he appeared to be preoccupied with the door to the main house behind him when she saw Phillips knock on the door. I don’t think that he was paying attention to what happened in front of him before he heard the knock and turned to look.
Everyone, except Fuhrman, seemed to be feeling his way along in unfamiliar territory. The fact that the detectives had no trouble with the dog suggests that the dog was VERY familiar with at least one of them because he had been there several times and because he had been there recently. The only one it could have been was Mark Fuhrman. – Jasper
