Miss Marple,
I’ll take the last part first.
I have found that it is helpful to look for innocent explanations before looking for sinister ones. The Gates letter could have several innocent explanations.
We don’t know that Billie Fuhrman wrote ONLY to Daryl Gates. She might have written to everyone she could think of including Gates AND Williams. Gates may have given best reply or the only one. She may have written to Gates because she knew that her son Mark spoke highly of him and he, too, was accused of being a racist. She may not have written to Williams fearing that he would not be sympathetic because he was black. She may not have appealed to Williams because SHE was a racist. That may not sound like an innocent explanation, but it is.
As to how toddler Fuhrman tuned to killer Fuhrman… Maybe the seed was in him from birth with a lot of care and feeding from Mom. You said it perfectly in your “Big brat” post in the Smoking Gun Archive. Kari summed it up best on this board when she said, “Furhman has no voice telling him he is wrong in what he is doing.” That missing voice is probibly Mom’s.
Then again, maybe Fuhrman was just a “bad seed,” somebody who was born without a conscience. More than one of us on this board has noted that Fuhrman makes a show of empathy but he doesn’t have it quite right. It’s as though he’s trying to simulate emotions that he doesn’t truly understand – like the pod people in The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Have you ever seen The Bad Seed movie with Patty McCormack as Rhoda, the homicidal 8-year-old? Scary movie! The Omen IV features another homicidal 8-year-old girl. Both of them are skillful liars. I KNOW by the associations in Fuhrman’s first book and his television movie that he relates strongly to both of them. – Jasper
