Miss Marple,
Diane Sawyer broadcast and interview with Mark Fuhrman on February 19, 1997. In it she lets Vannatter and Lange speak for themselves (on tape) to rebut Fuhrman’s charges that they missed the bloody fingerprint. She sums up their response to the charge by saying, “Lange and Vannatter not only raise questions about whether that fingerprint ever existed, they write in their book, in effect, it’s everybody’s word against Fuhrman.”
Sawyer then quotes from Evidence Dismissed, “No such fingerprint was seen by anyone else.” She adds, “That’s what they write.”
Fuhrman responds, “Untrue. “Brad Roberts saw the print.”
[Cut to head and shoulder shot of Brad Roberts] “I’m Brad Roberts. I’m a Homicide Detective for LAPD. I work homicide in West LA.”
You have to play back the last part of his statement to get it because Sawyer does a voice over. She says, “Detective Brad Roberts. You haven’t heard from him before. He was Fuhrman’s partner that night with him at Bundy and then at Simpson’s house at Rockingham. Roberts is the only person in this debate still with the LAPD. So what does he know about the bloody fingerprint?”
Roberts says, “I THINK I saw it before he did and actually pointed it out to him….”
With the blood on the lights switch that Roberts said he saw in the maid’s room, Sawyer asked Roberts if he told anyone about it. He replied that he told RHD detectives Richard Haro and Jim Harper. Sawyer said that Primetime Live contacted Haro who said that he seemed to recall something about blood on a light switch but it had been a long time.
The bottom line is that Fuhrman used Marcia’s success in hiding Roberts in ’94 and ’95 to introduce him to a national audience in ’97 as a “new” witness that Marcia, Vannatter and Lange kept hidden to cover up their incompetence. Through Roberts, Fuhrman was able to make it appear that Roberts was his witness and Haro and Harper backed up Roberts – even though Horo’s memory was shaky and Harper didn’t say a word.
I think that you are right about the reason Marcia chose Phillips to be the designated liar but I think that Moldea wrote what he did in Evidence Dismissed about the testimony of the detectives in the grand jury and the preliminary trial out of shear intellectual laziness.
Roberts was not camera shy in the videos of him with Fuhrman on Bundy and with Fuhrman, Marcia and Vannatter (separately) on Rockingham taken on the day after the murders, or in front of the camera with Dianne Sawyer. The only other detective that Moldea could have been talking about in the endnote you quoted was Tom Nolan. Fuhrman also used his NAME as a witness to one of his “discoveries” although no one ever talked to him. Nolen had to be the detective who didn’t want to get involved and everyone including Fuhrman and Roberts knew it. –Jasper
