The notes Fuhrman was talking about in Murder in Brentwood and on the PrimeTime Live show with Dianne Sawyer were his Bundy notes. Fuhrman said that the fingerprint in blood that he saw on the brass (it was bronze) lock of the back gate was in his notes, and it was. He gave that as the reason he didn’t point out the fingerprint to Vannatter or Lange.
Philips testified that he couldn’t say for sure that the notes Cochran showed him in court were the same ones Fuhrman handed to him on Bundy because he turned them over to Vannatter without reading them. Fuhrman said that he kept waiting for Vannatter to say something about the fingerprint and when he didn’t Fuhrman asked Marcia why he didn’t. Marcia told him that neither Vannatter nor Lange read them.
On PrimeTime Live Vannatter and Lange admitted that they didn’t read Fuhrman’s notes but they said a fingerprint in blood is something that the detective who found them should have shown them (Fuhrman did show them the bloody glove on Bundy and the one on Rockingham). They said that the discovery of a fingerprint in blood on a murder scene was so powerful that bells should have started ringing all over the place and it was ridiculous for a detective to claim that he didn’t do it because he put it in his notes.
Fuhrman responded that he’d never been in a situation where the detectives in charge did not read his notes and that it would have been “almost against protocol) to point it out to them. Amazingly, Dianne Sawyer accepted this nonsense and moved on, even though she had already pointed out that no photos of the fingerprint were ever taken. As the detective in charge at the time of the discovery (remember Fuhrman had not yet received word that West LA had been relieved by RHD) Fuhrman was the one responsible for seeing to it that Rokahr took the photo.
In Murder in Brentwood Fuhrman cleaned up the obvious flaw in his story about handing over his notes to Phillips by adding that he told Phillips about the fingerprint when he did it. On PrimeTime Live he said that Roberts was the one who discovered the fingerprint and pointed it out to him. Yet, in his book he said that went back to the condo and was completing his notes when Phillips approached him to tell him the West LA had been relieved. He did not tell Phillips about the fingerprint at that time, implying that he wanted to wait until he had finished them.
Fuhrman claimed that Vannatter and Marcia kept quit about the fingerprint in his note (although it was displayed on the Elmo in court) to hide their incompetence.
