Kato did not lie. He made three trips to the south path. He testified that he was scared and his subsequent actions are consistent with that claim.
He sees the limo and he makes sure that the limo driver sees him (he stops and waves at him) before he proceeds to the south path. He expects O.J. to buzz the limo in at any second because he knows the limo is there to take him to the airport and it’s reasonable to assume that O.J. heard the driver buzzing for him.
When Kato reaches the first gate to the south path he wrestles it open (it was off its hinges) and puts it to one side. He creeps into the path past the broken gate but only by a few feet. He doesn’t hear the Ashford gates open. He doesn’t hear the limo driving forward. He doesn’t hear car doors open and close. He doesn’t hear O.J.’s voice.
What does he do next?
He goes back to the Ashford gate, opens it, lets the driver pull up to O.J.’s walkway and get out of the car. He talks to him. THEN he goes back to the south path – after the noise of the limo pulling up, the door opening (and probably closing) and the sound of his conversation with the driver has had time to scare of a possible intruder.
Now he knows it is unlikely that if the noise was not an earthquake and an intruder was back there earlier he has opted to stick around. He knows that the driver is within calling distance and he still has the option to run. This time he goes all the way back to the second gate but doesn’t dare to open it. He’s playing hero but he is not playing for keeps.
He heads back to the driveway. On his way, he hears Park talking to O.J. They are not talking about Kato’s “earthquake.” When he gets joins them and tells O.J. his story O.J. pays no attention. Kato helps Park and O.J. load bags in the limo. O.J. goes out to his Bronco for something. When he comes back he goes into the house for something else and comes out again. Kato finally persuades O.J. to go back to the south path with him. Park also goes along but O.J. checks the time and decides that he has to leave for the airport.
I don’t show all of actions in the previous paragraph in the Kato’s Walk animation because it’s too involved for one animation. However, I do illustrate it in Iago.
The only tesimony that conflicts whith Kato's is Mark Fuhrman's. He testified that both gates on the south path were open when he went back their to investigate the thumps and found the glove. –Jasper
