I have not read the book but have read lengthy articles about the book and the reasons he believes that his father is the killer. For one thing, the timing of the move out of the country seems to coincide with some documents that indicate he might have been brought in to be questioned or arrested. So they do indicate that the father was being looked at as a "person of interest" in the case...long long before this guy ever had a clue about his father's possible involvement.
And the murders stopped when he moved out of the country. Weren't there some diaries or other things that made the man suspicious? It wasn't just the photo in the album.
Also this doctor ran with some 'heavy hitters" in the Hollywood community which would have given him "cover". The cops would not have wanted to enter that closed zone or stir up things in that community.
If I recall correctly, when he was shown the murder files, he was actually surprised to see that his Dad was all thru the files.
