You are right it was a lot more than just the photo he found. Steve Hodel had an independent handwriting analyst compare the writing from the notes of the Black Dehlia Avenger and the writing in lipstick on one body with his father's handwriting. The analyst indicated that she thought it was the same person who wrote the notes given to the Los Angeles Examiner as the one who wrote the personal correspondence Steve had from his father. His father's office was located very close to where the Black Dehlia was last seen waited for someone at the Biltmore Hotel. His father fits the description of a man seen with the Black Dehlia. And it goes on... In all, the book was very convincing.
His father headed up the County's communicable disease program and would have had inside information on a lot of important people. He also was reported involved in a ring of doctors who preformed abortions (not legal at the time). He had extensive connections with the rich and powerful in LA. He was a personal friend of Man Ray, an artist and Steve indicates the body of the Black Dehlia was posed exactly as one of Man Ray's artworks. Steve Hodel reports that the police bugged the Franklin home (designed by Llod Wright) and there are reports they taped his father's confession. But, the LAPD never really pursued him as a suspect.
