I do have Murder in Spokane. Although I haven’t read much of it yet I can already see that your antennae and mine are locked onto the same signals. Fuhrman’s secret task force assignment could be the line that connects the dots. What if he were Brambles' secret partner?
In ’84-‘85, Fuhrman would have defiantly been involved in narcotics work (the Mob?), although he says in Murder in Brentwood that he started working as a UNIFORMED cop in a GANG/narcotics unit in ’85 and continued in that role until ’87. Looking at his assignment in this context, you can see why I questioned his account of being called to Rockingham “in the fall or winter” of 1985. I didn’t question that he was there in ’85 with I wrote Iago; I questioned that he was CALLED there. If he was working in a gang/narcotics unit, he would have had no reason to get the call IF Nicole had called 911 – which she didn’t. Ergo, he must have had O.J. or Nicole under his personal surveillance and learned about the altercation from his direct observation or from someone outside of the LAPD.
What I’m getting at here, is that in ’84 and ’85 Fuhrman would not have been “Nicole’s cop” in the sense that Charlie used the expression, as a cop officially assigned to Nicole as one of Heidi’s girls because Heidi wasn’t in the picture, yet. He couldn’t have been Nicole’s cop in the sense that Steven Singular used the expression because the stories about Fuhrman having an affair with Nicole didn’t begin until after her divorce from O.J. in 1992. But in one way or another he could have been Victoria Seller’s cop or Faye Resnick’s cop or Denise Brown’s cop. He could have been working directly for Daryl Gates.
If we can get a better fix on Fuhrman’s undercover assignment in the last half of the ‘80s and on what Faye and Denise were doing during that time, it could clear up a lot of things. It might not tell us everything but it could tell us whether we’re on the right track. – Jasper
