The abrasions on Martha’s face and body showed that the killer dragged her, face down, by her ankles. She was moved twice. On the site of the initial attack her body was exposed to view. The place where she was first dragged (under a Japanese elm tree) and where she lay—still alive but bleeding profusely for as long as half and hour – was less exposed. The stab would in her throat could have been administered there or under the pine tree where last moved and her body was found.
I don’t think that you will find the “hair pulling” in any of Fuhrman’s books. You will find it in one of the McKinney tapes. This is where he talks about learning as a kid and having the lesson reinforced in the Marine Corps not to go toe-to-toe with a superior opponent but to sneak up behind him (or her) and bash him in the head. In the ’89 incident Nicole said that O.J. grabbed her by the hair. In the McKinney tapes Fuhrman said that he grabbed a Hispanic woman by the hair in the ’77 or ’78 cop-killing incident and slammed her face into a wall. By the way, the joy with which he described beating someone’s fact to bloody “mush” was unmistakable. Bet he got off on the smell, too.
If Bryant’s story holds up, I’d think that Fuhrman would want to avoid any mention of hair pulling in connection with a beating. He didn’t do it with O.J. and Nicole in Murder in Brentwood. I don’t recall reading about it in his Murder in Greenwich book and it wasn’t in the movie. But if Fuhrman did the kind of investigating that he said he did it’s conceivable that he heard the “caveman” story back in ’97 or ’98.
However, the thing that makes me think all of this is new to him is the extent to which he wrote in Murder in Brentwood about his efforts to clear a black man accused of murdering a white man. It seems to me that if he had heard the caveman story involving an African-American teenager he would have gone out of his way to “clear” him, too, just to show that he is not a racist. –Jasper
