Having worked with credit cards and around hotels, I can tell you, she could not have run up that kind of bill. The minute you get a credit card, you run it thru for the amount, which at check in time would be the nights stay. When I did it before 1994, you then had to physically take it to the bank to get the money.
Hotels audit the books each night. So any room service, phone calls, etc. would show up daily. If she had a large amount on anyone day, I am sure it would red flag them to run her card.
When they get stuck with those large bills are when a big spender runs up room service in a party or something.
With American Express, it might happen. American Express does not pay the vender. until the owner of the card pays them. Reason so many places do not accept the card.
