I agree with you. They would have run that credit card (for amt) at least once a week --if not more.
When I stay at a motel for a week--I have one amt on the credit card for the week--not 7 individual nights. However, that doesn't mean the hotel doesn't check with the credit card company for an "oK" for the charge.
Some people have a high credit card amt. My Mom does. Hers would cover a $20,000 bill. But in the end--what you would have is a huge credit card bill--not something the law would go after you about--esp. just a few months after the fact. That bill was run up during the Northridge earthquake. She was arrested, I guess, the following January when Cochran mentioned her in the Opening Statement.
What we don't know is if she was challenging the amt or the charge at all.
People fail to pay their credit card balances all the time and they don't end up in jail for a year.
And she claims it wasn't her. That she checked out after 3 days and didn't go back. That's the kicker. A three day charge that she evidently did pay and the a missed day and then checking back in for a $20,000 stay.
And as you say, it would be real hard to charge up that amt at the hotel alone unless some big time partying went on. Even if the hotels were charging $200 per day because of the earthquake--that is $6,000 for a month. Add a thousand or so more to eat, etc.--at best a regular person would maybe charge less than $10,000 for the month.
Since credit cards have LImits and the hotel people KNOW this--it wouldn't be too long before they would be running that card. I'd say no more than a week -if not before.
And as I say---what you have in the end is a credit card bill---not a bill against the hotel.
