What the verdict came down to WAS common sense.
I have been watching the tapes from the trial.
I watched Cochran in opening and closing arguments and some of the questioning of Scheck of Fung. I watched a bit (a very Little bit) of Darden's closing statements.
The defense won that hands down. With Clark CHANGING the time of the knocks to 1052 or 1053 (depending on when she said it), and Darden's convoluted manipulation of OJ's violent career with Nicole---compared to what Cochran and Scheck said---anybody with common sense would have gone for the defense statements rather than the prosecution no matter what the blood drops said and what % of chance it was OJ"s blood.
Watching the tortured answers of Fung when he didn't want to say that dragging Ron's body over the glove, envelope and knit cap made any difference. Or that collecting the bodies before the evidence was the wrong thing to do. Or the use of the blanket was a bad thing to do.
He made himself look and sound stupid.
And don't forget that 4-6 people were standing in the caged area or at the bottom of the steps prior to collecting the evidence. Fung didn't want to say that this was bad either---even though great explanations had taken place about trace evidence and the need for a secure crime scene.
And I had forgotten that Goldberg objected to and/or said "irrelevant, your honor" to every single question that Scheck asked Fung (delaying the trial by perhaps days in total). As one pundit said--it made the prosecution look like they were hiding something.
I came across something else when Cochran played the audio of the call that Phillips made to the coroner at 8 AM. When the coroner asks, Phillips says that they do not know the ID of the victims and this is 8 AM!!! They have been at Bundy for close to 3 hours by now making a notification of death and the Browns have been called and told by this time--as has OJ.
He doesn't say that yes, but that is sensitive and we will tell you later---he says they don't know.
Common sense told the jury---and it told me as time went on that something was very very wrong in this case. Things weren't done accidentally wrong or by lack of ability---but by design.
