Jasper, I, too, thought at first that Vannatter was just stupid. But not so. The more I watched him and going back and seeing the videos I have, I see that he had a very planned way of answering the questions.
He basically talked as if the OJ lawyers were too stupid to live and he, himself was brillant. WHILE saying some of the most stupid things you can ever hear about a crime investigation.
And I have yet to figure out WHY the defense treated Lange differently--like he --unlike the others was an honest cop.
He did the same as Vannatter and the others--just with a different style. He didn't do it with an "attitude" as Vannatter did. Even Fuhrman came off more sincere than Vannatter did.
I don't see why the defense thought he was less "guilty" in this setup than the others.
For one thing--Fung lets this out (reluctantly) when he said that when he took the Rockingham glove into and back out of the Bundy scene (which Lange knew better than to do) and he went back to the truck---that is when Lange had Ron's body moved over top of the evidence. Fung finally says that he never dreamed that Lange would do that. Although he doesn't out and out say so--Fung was shocked and stunned that he had the body moved. (before the evidence was collected)
I think he was willing to give him the benefit of doubt over moving Nicole because she blocked the scene but moving Ron was a deliberate act.
Fung tried to cover by saying that it was "preferable" to collect the evidence and photograph it in place before the bodies are moved but you could tell he meant it was a huge mistake. And I use the word "mistake" loosely. It wasn't a mistake. It was done deliberately.
I personally believe now after rewatching this--that the collection of a blanket from inside the house that could have had OJ's hair on it to use to put over Nicole--was not an error or a mistake at all--but deliberate to get OJ's hair inside the crime scene if it wasn't already there.
If you flip that blanket open over the bodies--hair and fiber would have gotten on the hat and glove--if it wasn't there before. (Just like you take a tablecloth out after a meal and shake it out in the yard to get the crumbs off it.)
And I am beginning to wonder if the piece of paper not collected is actually missing rather than that Fung didn't collect it. Lange directs Fung to get a Banana Label (in the blood beside Nicole I learned) but not the piece of paper near it? Don't think so.
And in the call to the coroner--Phillips not only lies and tells him they don't know who the victims are but that they are bending the rules.
I also learned that ordinarily a criminalogist from the coroner's office comes with the coroner's office but did not this time.
BTW, I saw on a New Law and Order that when some cops clear the crime scene early and say to the owners that they should "wash down" the scene--that in that case (taken from real cases) the perps of the crime were those cops themselves.
With that blanket being "flipped" over Nicole and 4-6 people standing around in the scene before the evidence is collected---the blue black fiber may mean nothing to the crime (or everything). The dog hair and the "possible" but not for certain hair from OJ may mean nothing. Also the fibers from the Bronco may mean nothing.
Do you recall that Ron had at least 30 knife wounds? Cochran said that repeatedly and there was never an objection. Take away the "biggies" at the neck,leg and torso and that is STILL a hell of a lot of knife wounds. And where were they?
Also something else that popped out from what Cochran said---they were looking for evidence of a clean up by OJ in his bathroom BUT took none of the clothes or towels or washcloths from the hamper.
ANd another thing that stuck out when Cochran was questioning Vannatter. Although it is required by law and regulation that they kept a sequence of time and place for evidence found---none of the cops nor the "master notekeeper" wrote down that they found that glove or when. I think I understood him to say that it was not done for the blooddrops in the driveway either. Hence, we have an hour's difference in when Vannatter says they were found and when MF says they were found.
There is NO official record that they were found.
Also, Vannatter says at one point in the Prelim that he saw the drops on the lower part of the Bronco and in trial he says he did not.
