I apologize for not writing sooner to tell you about Lou’s source of income before O.J. came along. Couldn’t find the time to look it up.
In Sheila Weller’s Raging Heat (page 86) she says that Lou Brown was a military officer when he met Juditha in 1954 and worked as the circulation manager for the newspaper Stars and Stripes. Denise and Nicole were born while Lou was married to another woman. After Nicole’s birth in 1959, Lou and Juditha got married and moved to California in 1963.
Weller doesn’t say how long Lou was in he service but as a military officer he would have gotten pay equivalent to a civilian executive; the higher his rank, the higher his pay. Unfortunately, Weller does not say what his rank was. She doesn’t say how long he was in the service. She doesn’t even say which branch of service he was in so I can’t say whether he received a military pension. If he enlisted at 18 and served 20 years in the Army, Air Force or Marine Corps, he would have been a captain or more likely a major and eligible for handsome retirement benefits for the rest of his life
In any event he could have saved enough money as a military officer in five or six years to do what says he did when he moved to California. On page 86 of Raging Heart, Weller says that Lou owned several car washes. He and his family lived very well. –Jasper
