The ONLY plausible interpretation of what Darden said is what he said – Fuhrman did it. The question is why did he say it. Was he thinking about Fuhrman while he was taking about O.J. the wrong name came out? Was it a Freudian slip? Or was it a deliberate “mistake.”
Like most people, I probably accepted it at the time as the kind of mistake you make when you call one of your kids by the wrong name, which signifies only that both of them were on your mind. But looking back at it through the prism of his novel, a Freudian slip or a deliberate “error” seems more likely.
On the other hand, the novel was supposed to be a murder mystery and Darden might have simply used the fact that he argued against a frame-up in the O.J. case to give his novel an unexpected twist.
Right now I’m leaning toward deliberate error. –Jasper
