Nancy Drew, I wouldn't know about VERY high IQ's as to myself because I don't have one...but I have observed through teaching--and working in retail later, etc. that some people are more interested in pursuing their own "interests" above a job.
They may have a very ordinary "job" but spend their energies on their hobbies or on reading for pleasure and knowledge, etc.
Some of it is lack of any competitive nature. They are introspective and look inward.
Also, with even the high corporation jobs that involve science and other other things--the person has to do what the company wants done. The person is not free to pursue their own interests.
I have seen accepting ordinary jobs even though the person may have several degrees for personal reasons. ..like family. They may find family life more important than a job that would required 10-14 hour days. Or they have a child that is ill or a parent that is ill or getting elderly.
Sometimes an ordinary job that requires no thinking--allows the person to go off into some fantasy world and think up a storm--but work at the same time.
I do know one area and that is teaching. And I found that in teaching--sometimes the best teachers are NOT the highest IQ on the block. Of course, they are not stupid by any means but those people who got a 4.0 with NO effort whatsoever FAIL to understand why everybody else can't "get it" as easily. So teaching children who have difficulties or who don't get it the first time is an exercise in frustration for them.
And btw, some folks with extremely high IQ's do not have ANY common sense...or life skills. They aren't leaders but are loners.
It is a mystery for sure.
