The jogger mentioned that the SUV she saw was parked in an unusual place. We did not hear that she thought it was an unusual vehicle for the area. That’s what makes me believe that she did see a late model Bronco, Blazer, Jeep or Range Rover.
The IH Scout that the police identified as belonging to a neighbor was not parked anywhere near the 800 Block of Bundy on the 13th and it did not look anything like a Bronco, a Blazer or a Jeep manufactured in the 1990’s. I believe it was a 1979 Scout. The body style of all SUVs followed similar patterns in the ‘70s. The only way you could tell them apart was by the grill, the c-pillar and the logo. They all looked very similar to military jeeps from the Korean War, era.
In the 1980s SUVs all began to look the way O.J.’s Bronco did. Fuhrman’s 1980 Scout (it was a 1980, not a 1984 – sorry about that) was a clunky version of the Jeep, Bronco and Blazer. It did not have flaring wheel lips and the headlights did not wrap around to the fender. However, the body style was close enough to other SUVs manufactured in the ’80s and ’90s to fit the same general description. That’s what made a light-colored 1980 Scout ideal for brief appearances in the area. Most observers would have been unable to say what kind of SUV it was and all light-colored vehicles can appear to be light green, light blue or white depending on the lighting and viewing angle – as Mark Fuhrman pointed out in Murder in Brentwood.
If you initially saw a 1980 Scout briefly from the front, it would have been hard to distinguish from O.J.’s ’94 Bronco. But as soon as you got a glimpse of the body side you might think that it could have been a Blazer or a Jeep unless you were specifically looking for the body side features that distinguished them. The only reason I can think of for the police ever mentioning the Scout belonging to a neighbor was to confuse the issue of Fuhrman’s Scout. In terms of appearance, the neighbor’s Scout had no more relevance to O.J.’s Bronco than a Volkswagen bus. –Jasper
