Kari,

Great analysis.

I agree with you completely about Fung and I will go a step farther than you did with the preliminary hearing. I think the grand jury should have been the end of it. I think that it would have been the end of it if Marcia Clark had allowed it to run its course. And I don’t think that Robert Blake would have been arrested if the courts had sanctioned the prosecution for is shenanigans in the O.J. case. I think that you are dead on there.

Matheson is not my pick as Singular’s source for some of the reasons I put in my reply to Miss Marple. Singular’s source was disgusted with the DA’s whole routine of lying, fudging and cutting corners to win convictions. The SID lab was operated in a way that facilitated that lying, fudging and cutting corners. Matheson was in a stronger position than Michelle Kestler to curb that nonsense. He supervised the day-to-day operations of the lab. Kestler mostly sat in an ivory tower, keeping up to date on the latest technical and administrative trends, setting general policies, approving overtime, etc.

From Kestler’s actions in the O.J. case it looks to me as though she was surprised to see so many irregularities in her procedures and desperate to either correct them (belatedly) or cover them up. I don’t think she had a good handle on what she was responsible for and she didn’t want anyone to know how badly she was doing her job

I’m guessing that Singular’s source was never mentioned anywhere because he or she (I am inclined to believe “she”) wasn’t directly involved in the case. The source got too many specific things wrong. They were the types of things you get from secondhand information that mixed facts with hearsay and opinions. The things the source got right had to do with general attitudes in the DA’s office, the LAPD and the SID, things you would get right by dealing with these people every day. –Jasper
