Move those punctuation marks around a little and the answer starts making sense:
I don't know the first time. When I was in Chicago and all, but at the house I was just running around.
Most interestingly,in the L & V version, this answer reads:
"{I don't know. At the first time, I know I had it when I was in Chicago and all, but at the house I was just running around. . ."
The L & V is clearly much closer to your revised punctuation. Not quite, but Simpson's answer makes sense that the first he realized he had a cut was in Chicago.
It is after this they get Simpson to admit that well, yes, maybe it's possible I was also bleeding at the house, and that he even put something on it and it stopped. But he makes clear that whatever it might have been, it was just a minor thing.
The detectives didn't press him on it, because they didn't want anything more from Simpson where he might deny it. They had an admission he could have bled, and that's all they needed and wanted. He was stuck with the possibility he could have bled.
