I could not tell whether you were unaware of the semantic game that Fuhrman played with his choice of words or you were using my post to illustrate how the game is played. In either case, it looks as though it needs to be explained a little better. If you don’t wish to read chapters 23-28 of Iago, the following summary might help. Just keep in mind that there is much more behind it than I can show you in one or two paragraphs …
“Interrogation Text” is Fuhrman’s title for Lange and Vannatter’s interrogation. By avoiding the word “transcript” he makes it possible to argue that his written copy of the interview came from Lange and Vannatter’s transcript rather than directly from the tapes. By changing the format of Lange and Vannatter’s transcript so conspicuously, he also made it possible to argue that he made his own transcript directly from the tapes. I’m not surprised that you found his “text” close enough to Vannatter and Lange’s “transcript” for them to appear to “track.” In this sort of word game, it has to be as close as possible to the real thing to slip in a few unnoticed changes that have a major impact overall.
