Yes, yes, yes and yes!
We all think in pictures, whether we realize it or not. So-called “abstract thinking” is a myth. Some of us are simply more conscious of the pictures we think with than others.
That’s why cops and lawyers skip around as much as they do in their questioning. They don’t want everyone to get the clearest possible picture of what happened or what someone says happened from point A to point B on a map or a clock. They want to create the clearest possible picture of the story they what people to believe and the image they want them to have of the witness. Meanwhile, you and I are drawing pictures in our heads of what these people are talking about. We look at the drawings and photos they submit and try to plug them into the words. When we get a clear picture that answers the question we ORIGINALLY asked, it has a way of sticking. The more you understand how vulnerable EVERYBODY is to this sort of mental image manipulation, the more you see it in Fuhrman’s books, his testimony, his letter to the city attorney, his Bundy notes – and the testimony of the people who were with him on Bundy and Rockingham.
I cringe every time I look at the page in Iago where I drew Heidstra in the alley behind Nicole’s condo (wrong ally) and the ally running into Bundy (it doesn’t). But if you follow the testimony I was trying to follow when I drew it (Heidstra’s and Riske’s) and the diagrams (one of Marcia’s diagrams is upside down) you can see why I was confused. I went to page 110 of Cliff Linedecker’s OJ A to Z to clarify the issue. Linedecker got it wrong but what he wrote conformed to the clearest image already in my head so I went with it. This is the same thing as your mental picture of the Bronco backing up.
The thing to remember is that the person with the most power to manipulate those images is the person who did the most to point the finger of blame at O.J. Simpson.
Look again at the close-up of Fuhrman’s pointing Finger photo (Iago Appendix). You get the picture of a man dressed for a cold day outside (like O.J. doing sideline interviews at outdoor stadiums for Monday Night Football. If you stand the photo up you get the heel print where it should be on a standing man. Moving our mind’s eye up to the next item of clothing, you see the winter glove just as you would if you were looking at a man. The last item is the knit cap. Is that a coincidence or what? I think it’s a “what”. –Jasper
