The significance of the virgin shoes should never be forgotten. Their pristine condition tells us that they were selected for a special purpose at least a year and a half before the murders (size-12 Bruno Magli Lorenzos were last sold in’92) and that it was crucial not to show a wear pattern of any kind.
The Reeboks that Lange got from O.J. had to show a wear pattern that reflected the way he walked. With over a two hundred homicide investigations under his belt, Lange had to know how important the wear pattern was when he picked the shoes up. I suspect that the real reason he ACTED so casual abut them was because he wanted to study them himself and check them against his mental notes of the bloody shoeprints.
At 6’ 2” Lange had to have a good idea of the Reeboks’ size by his own shoe-size regardless of what the label said. It was the physical size of the Reeboks compared to the two six-inch rulers next to the bloody shoeprints that mattered. Lange knew that the tread design of the Reeboks did not match the bloody shoeprints and he could probably tell that the “red spots” on the shoes were not blood. The only thing of value left with the Reeboks was a reference for the wear pattern in the bloody shoeprints.
I think that is why Lange was so eager to have Dominique identify the killer’s shoe from a Bruno Magli brochure. Evidence Dismissed says by definition that she picked the wrong shoes (the killer’s Lorenzos, were technically “boots”; she picked low-quarter shoes) but declares that she picked the right ones. When Lange struck out with the wear pattern on the bloody shoeprints and the FBI couldn’t come up with one, either, because the killer’s shoes hadn’t been worn enough to show a pattern, he did the next best thing. He hid the real issue in a controversy that was designed to go in circles.
The wear pattern on the Reeboks was as important as the size, which matched O.J. and Fuhrman and the heel-to-toe relationship in the bloody shoeprint stride, which also matched O.J. and Fuhrman. The wear pattern of the Reeboks could only have matched only O.J. Simpson. The wear pattern of the bloody shoeprints matched no one because the shoes that made them hadn’t been worn enough to show a pattern. By creating so much controversy over the shoes, the prosecution team drew attention away from the feet inside of them. The virgin treads made that misdirection possible. –Jasper
