First, I have to make another correction. The PI’s name is Bill Pavelic, not John (his real name is Zvonko Pavelic but he is called Bill). I was thinking of the first name of Shapiro’s other PI, John McNally.
I think that at least three things happened before the grand jury hearing that caused Marcia to want to hide Fuhrman.
In the first place, Marcia was a friend of Phil Vannatter who wrote the shaky search warrants that left out Fuhrman’s name. The more she said about Fuhrman the more grief she brought on her pal Vannatter and the more pressure she could expect from the defense for tossing out the evidence obtained with both search warrants. She needed Vannatter as the lead detective on Rockingham and the more that was said about Fuhrman’s role on Rockingham the more heat and the less glory went to Vannatter.
Secondly, I have a feeling that Riske put a bug in the ear of Vannatter and Phillips to keep an eye on Fuhrman. Riske had worked with him before. He seemed damned uncomfortable on the witness stand talking about the evidence on Bundy that Fuhrman was associated with – particularly about the photo of Fuhrman pointing to the glove. If Riske did warn Vannatter that Fuhrman was a slippery customer, he would have passed that on to Marcia.
Then there was Fuhrman himself. If Fuhrman gave Marcia the Grand Tour, he had to introduce her to Roberts (assuming that she didn’t already know him) as his partner. It also makes you wonder about the socks she supposedly didn’t see on the rug when she went to O.J.’s bedroom door and saw Roberts. Did she go to the door unescorted? Did the Grand Tour exclude the socks? I don’t think so unless they showed up later. –Jasper
