I think both you and Miss Marple are correct about MF's portrayal of himself in the Moxley book--and the way he was portrayed in the movie.
A little of both and for many reasons.
Also, think of this. MF's big goal was to become a FICTION writer. And while we may all say here he has done plenty of that already, basically he has done rehashes of real crimes. He WANTED to be like his former LAPD heroes who have written rather raunchy and hard-hitting novels where he gets to knock people around and talk dirty. And have violence and sex in them. So far, he is trapped into this mode he has gotten himself in.
And he is not ready for "prime time" in that area. And he may not ever get there. It may prove that he is never accepted as that kind of writer nor will he ever be able to go into that mode because if he does---it will perhaps show a side of him that will expose him. He is locked into the rehab MF mode.
So, he makes do with being the arrogant, brash, not liked detective who comes in and "solves" the crime or tells the cops what all they did wrong (Spokane).
ANY book that HE does based on LAPD experiences that starts to be hard hitting, violent, shows corruption, etc. will be judged quite harshly.
He just may have worked himself into a mode he is unable to get out of.
He may become the "joke' that Dommonic Dunne is. TV will have Dom Dunne on as guests and ask his opinion, etc. but he is still the "joke'.
The same could be said of MF no matter how many times he is asked to be on tv about these murder cases that are currently being talked about.
