When we were taking a closer look at how the detectives came to knock on Kato’s door, I noticed that the discrepancies between the Vannatter and Lange team and the Fuhrman and Phillips team were not randomly different. They followed a pattern. The pattern led me to believe that Phillips and Lange were on their way to the third bungalow (instead of stopping at the first one) when Fuhrman called Phillips back to Kato’s door and announced that he saw someone inside.

My idea was based upon the testimony of all the detectives, which I had just gone over, and everything I could remember about Arnelle and Gigi. I got Arnelle’s testimony right about not taking the detectives to the “maid’s quarters” behind the garage but I made the mistake of thinking that the information about Gigi taking Michelle’s place in the third bungalow was in Gigi’s testimony or Arnelle’s. It wasn’t.

It was in Jeffery Toobin’s The Run of His Life, page 38:

“…Leaving her guest house, Arnelle began walking toward the Ashford gate to see if her Father’s car was there – that was where he usually parked it. The detectives informed her that the Bronco was in fact parked on Rockingham. Using her key, Arnelle let them into the main house.

“On the way they passed the third guest house – it belonged to the housekeeper, Gigi Guarin – and noticed that it was empty….”

The “On the way” sentence should have been inserted in the previous paragraph in place of “Using her key.” Looks like an editing slip-up. No big deal except that when you are scanning quickly you might think that Toobin was talking about the maid’s quarters behind the garage. I have a feeling that was the idea.

I think that Toobin put the right information in the wrong place to perpetuate the detectives’ lie that Arnelle took them to the little room labeled “maid’s room” on the charts when she actually took them “past” the third bungalow on her way to the Ashford gate. –Jasper
