Yes, this does scream ketchup. I don’t believe it was, though. Some people prefer A-1 steak sauce or taco sauce to ketchup and I don't think that Kato told anyone at the time that O.J. gobbled his meal up in the car.
I can’t shake the sense that I heard Dershowits say the spots were taco sauce. I could be wrong about that but Uelmen did mention taco sauce in connection with the spot on the door. That spot appeared before the detectives entered the property and talked to Kato. If Miss Marple was right about the spots on the floor being planted to give Kato the impression that they were blood (thus leading him out of the main door instead of the breakfast nook doors) taco sauce would have been the best choice. You would want Kato thinking “blood,” not ketchup, to bias anything he might think about O.J. in an incriminating way. Having come from McDonalds with O.J., there was a risk with ketchup that his first impressing would be that all of the drops were ketchup. On the other had, a detective did tell Kato not to step in the “blood.”
I think that Fung or Mazola would have known on sight if the drops were ketchup. Taco sauce? Maybe not. Taco sauce looks more like blood than ketchup does when it dries and the constancy is more like blood. It’s thinner than ketchup and so it would make a better “blood drop,” too. It’s harder to identify up close. I also think that it dries faster and drying time here is crucial.
