I replied too quickly (just woke up). I don’t make guesses like the one I made about Nicole’s sexual practices with men other than O.J. without good reasons. They could be wrong but they are not arbitrary. I just couldn’t remember what they were when I said I was wrong. On further reflection, maybe I wasn’t.
Didn’t Nicole and O.J. get married because she wanted children but did not what to have them out of wedlock?
Nicole’s abortions indicate that she was not using contraceptives. That’s a built-in conflict with a religion that forbids any form of artificial birth control. If you have a strong sex drive under a prohibition against artificial contraception AND abortion, you are bound to slip up somewhere. Under strict Catholic law, any form of sex that does not lead to procreation is forbidden. The Church forbids male masturbation to completion and the use of condoms because “spilling the seed” is what counts. Yet, it recommends “coatis interruptus,” which leads to the same “seed spilling” result.
According to my Catholic friends and a Catholic woman I was intimately involved with, the idea that human life exists in sperm is at the heart of the issue. In other words, the “seed” analogy is supposed to be taken literally. The man plants his seed in the woman’s womb and it grows. Killing the seed is therefore the same thing as killing unborn children. If you look at it this way, abortion is the lesser of the two evils because it doesn’t happen as often and if you’re lucky it won’t happen at all.
My Catholic lady friend had Catholic icons all over her apartment. She wore a crucifix, went to confession and had a big picture of Jesus hanging over her bed (I can’t begin to tell you how unsettling that was while we were "sinning"). She believed in her religion but she had one abortion that I know of and she may have had more. I don’t know the statistics, but it would surprise me greatly if the rate of abortions among Catholics was significantly less than any other segment of the population. It would not surprise me if the rate were higher.
I’m not Catholic so I don’t have to wrestle with issues like these. Nicole was Catholic, so she did. The best minds in the Church have wrestled with them for centuries. The debates continue. Meanwhile, what is a woman to do? –Jasper
