When I was looking up any reference to the letters I didn’t recall I ran across the item you had in mind. You read about the letters being delivered routinely by messenger in the November 22, 1996 civil trial transcript. O.J. said that he thought he sent all of his letters to Nicole by messenger. He did it through his personal secretary Cathy Randa who sighed them for O.J. (common business practice). The IRS letter was defiantly a legal move on O.J.’s part to stay out of trouble with the government and to put Nicole on notice that her attempt to use his address as hers was a serious crime.
The issue is still, why was O.J. sending Nicole messages rather than picking up the phone and telling her? The answer has to be that he did it on his lawyer’s (Skip Taft) advice. The language is too precise and formulaic for any other interpretation. The IRS letter came before the Gigi letter so if discussion of one letter was influenced by the other, the IRS letter had to have influenced the Gigi letter.
From O.J.’s civil trial testimony, it appears that he sent Nicole many letters by way of his company’s messenger service. After going though this exercise, I think it’s safe to say that all of them were written and hand-delivered for the reasons they appear to on their face; to establish a legal record for safeguarding O.J.’s interests. –Jasper
