The answer is obvious. Brentwood might be in the middle of L.A. but it was an exclusive area. The police were saying they didn't even know who the victims were until the next morning. People gossiped and the police wouldn't need to know through channels about the custody agreement. I understand it is odd, but since they set on the story until just before noon the next day anything someone said someone else said etc... Look at the true story of how that producer died on William Randolph Hearst's yacht to protect all on board, even his widow, from Scandal. They make a movie of it. Once the killer is dead and O.J. Dies or fifty years pass the truth will come out.
