Mark Fuhrman met with screenwriter Laura Hart less than six months after the baseball bat incident. He was a chronic name-dropper and so openly contemptuous of black people that I found it amazing he didnt mention the incident to Laura Hart.
Until89 there was more reason for Fuhrman to hide his part in the 84 incident than to reveal it. When he first met with Hart in April of 85 a record of a domestic dispute call from 360 North Rockingham would have still been on record if one had existed. By 1989 any such record would have been purged. Fuhrman could therefore claim in 89 that he got a domestic dispute call in 85 with no way to prove that he didnt. The only thing standing in his way was his partner, Tom Brantley. I think thats why I think Fuhrman waited so long to write the letter, to make sure that Brantley wouldnt contradict him.
No 911 operator ever came forward to say that he or she received a 911 call from Rockingham prior to 1989 and dispatched anyone to the scene. And you can bet that Marcia Clark pulled out all the stops to find one. Because a celebrity was involved, it would have been memorable. The way Sharon Gilbert described the procedure she followed in 89, it seems unlikely that anyone could have made out an incident report that would have resulted in a police car being dispatched to the scene.
The procedure could not have changed that much because the fundamental issues for the operator were the same. She would have had to determine whether a possible emergency existed so as not to tie up emergency personnel in the event of a real emergency. Then she had to identify the type of emergency to determine the appropriate response.
No one disputes the fact that Nicole pushed the button for Westec. She didnt speak with anyone until Mark Day arrived. The idea that Day kept a lid on the situation until the police arrived is ridiculous. Nicole and O.J. had gotten rowdy in their front yard. O.J. had beaten up his car with a baseball bat. The incident was already history. Nobody was being threaded. Nobody was afraid. There was no reason for Day to wait for the police unless he called them or someone in particular who happened to be a policeman. Jasper
