Kari, That can’t be it. Fuhrman wrote his letter in February 1989. The city attorney Rob Pringle asked Sgt. Ferrell to go back five years to see if there were any other reports of spouse abuse against O.J. Ferrell found none in the computer and started asking around. “Fall or winter” of ’84 would have put the incident in the timeframe Pringle asked for. Before ’89, I think that Fuhrman figured he could make a name for himself by “catching” O.J. in some kind of illegal narcotics deal. Fuhrman’s first book showed that he was big on cultivating “snitches.” It also showed that he was big on starting rumors as a tactical measure and following up on rumors about O.J. in his “search” for the missing murder weapon. Rumors of O.J.’s involvement in cocaine trafficking came with him to Brentwood from Buffalo in 1978. That was two years after Fuhrman joined the LAPD and got a miner rebuke on his performance evaluation for trying too hard to “make the big arrest” instead of doing what he was told to do. Through Fuhrman’s association with the Police Protective League between 1984 and 1988 he was able to maneuver his way into jobs that got him closer to the skills and contacts he would need to manufacture evidence against O.J. and make “the big arrest.” It appears that most of his efforts regarding O.J. and Nicole (including his friendship with Ron Shipp) were geared toward narcotics though there is some indication that he was playing with the idea of murder. He worked in a narcotics unit in ’86 and part of ’87. He might have worked narcotics in ’85 as well. I’m not sure about that. The ’89 incident changed everything. Now there was a chance to do something much bigger than narcotics and more specific than involving O.J. somehow in a murder. He had to wait to see if his letter would fly before he could start working on his next big step then figure how what that step should be. In 1990, he became a West LA homicide detective. –Jasper
