Lange didn't merely "believe" that he heard Denise on the extension; he had to know it. He had the voices and speech patterns of three female Browns to pick from: Juditha, Tanya and Denise. Juditha sounded older than she was. She had a German accent as well as a distinctive cadence and timber. Tanya was still in bed when the call came in. The only person Lange could have heard on the other extension initially was Denise. He talked to Juditha AFTER Denise broke in with her speech about knowing that the “MF” was going to do it then repeating “O.J. did it.” As far as Juditha and Tanya knew when Denise started screaming that O.J. did it, that news came from the person who made the phone call. Only Tom Lange and Lou Brown knew otherwise.
Dominique lived in Dana Point but not in her parents’ home. Lou Brown drove her Jeep to and from Brentwood the night before and Dominique went home that night with her son. The only reason for Denise to say that she wasn’t sure if Dominique was there was to cast doubt on Lange’s perception of who he heard on the other end of the line when he gave the bad news to Lou Brown. When you get UNEXPECTED news about the death of a loved one, that moment is frozen in your memory forever.
Denise’s accusatory outburst was clearly a big reason Tom Lange relied on her as a valuable resource in his investigation. Joe Bosco said that Denise told “police” that she saw O.J. wearing the killer’s shoes. What do you want to bet that the policeman she told was Tom Lange? Why would he have shown the pictures in the Bruno Magli brochure to Dominique (which he did) and not to the rest of the Browns including Denise?
One more thing… Lange did not say that Nicole was murdered. He said that she had been killed at her home. It could have happened in a deadly fall, a fire, a robbery-gone-bad or a fight with one of her recent boyfriends that got out of hand. Yet, with no hesitation, no moment of stunned silence in disbelief at news so horrible, Denise proclaims that she knows who the killer is and that she “knew” he would do it. Lange had to believe that Denise had powerful reasons for jumping to that conclusion.
Too bad he never considered the possibility that she told the truth about knowing who the killer was but lied about O.J. Denise had no reason to believe that O.J. did it and she had no reason to pick up the phone that morning unless she was waiting for the call. –Jasper
