Jeeves,
I can’t answer your question about Shipp’s address in ’94 but you may not need it. Wherever Shipp lived, it had to have been in close reach of Rockingham and Bundy.
Like any large city, LA has a number of communities with distinctive names within the city limits as well as suburban communities close by or within easy reach of each other by arterial streets or freeways. The San Diego Freeway (I-409) is good to know.
To get an overview of the LA area I suggest that you go to MapQuest http://www.mapquest.com/maps/city.adp and start with “Los Angeles, CA.” Click “Get Map” then zoom in and out to read the various community names in the surrounding area.
If you want Brentwood, specifically, you might want to use a specific address. I always use 875 S. Bundy (Nicole’s condo) or 360 N. Rockingham (O.J.’s estate). Other key places on the map are the Town and Country Limousine Service on the border of Torrance (where Denise worked four days a week) and Redondo Beach (where Fuhrman lived and where he met Kathleen Bell and Andrea Terry). The Wilshire police station is at 4861 West Venice Los Angeles, CA and the West LA police station is on 1663 Butler Avenue Los Angeles, CA. They were the same places in 1994. The Smartfellows Press home page link for this information is LAPD ( http://www.lapdonline.org/index.htm ).
Ron Shipp, like Kato Kaelin and Allan Park, was an aspiring actor. His “Leo” pseudonym in Raging Heart did nothing to hide his identity. I don’t know what financial arrangement Shipp had with Weller or how they hooked up (I’d really like to know that) but I suspect that he intended to make it big in show business on the recognition he got from the book and his performance on the witness stand. I thought it was interesting that he made two Shakespearian references in court: “…blood on my hands” from Lady MacBeth in MacBeth and incriminating dream evidence from Iago in Othello. Carl Douglas brought him down when he linked him to Fuhrman.
As a writer with heavy backers, Fuhrman could reinvent himself. Ship couldn’t. And unlike Faye Resnick he did not have juicy sex stories he could tell with the help of a professional ghostwriter and an enthusiastic publisher. From everything I’ve seen of Shipp, he tried to cash in on his association with the case but nothing worked out for him the way it did for some others. –Jasper
