Nobdy knows "the real story." The way I see it, two calls could have been made to different locations. I am inclined to believe that John is right but most of the discussion about this subject took place among the talking heads between sidebars during the criminal trial and the only written information I’ve been able to find on the subject is in the civil trial transcripts and a note on page 128 of Killing Time.
According to Killing Time, “LAPD logs reveal that an anonymous woman called 911 at around 10:30 on the night of June 12, 1994 to ask police if they had received a report of a ‘double murder’ in the 800 block of South Bundy Drive.” This could be a corrupted version of the call that somebody made to the Wilshire police station. However, it’s hard for me to see how an anonymous call to 911 that was logged in could be confused with a call to a particular police station that wasn’t logged.
The call to Wilshire wasn’t necessarily anonymous. The caller identified herself as a reporter from Channel 4 TV. She could have given her name and Merrin forgot or didn’t pay attention to it because he received 12 phone calls a day from reports asking if anyone had been murdered. The only reason the call stood out in his mind was because she specifically asked him if the police were “sitting on TWO bodies on the WEST SIDE.” He did not write a report and no one else did until he passed the story along to Det. Tippin of RHD nearly four weeks after the murders.
Tippin made a note of what Merrin told him over the phone. The caller didn’t specify the 800 block of Bundy. If she had, Sgt. Merrin certainly would have referred the caller to the West LA station because the 800 block of Bundy was in Brentwood and the Wilshire station did not cover Brentwood. Tippin’s note did not include the 800 block of Bundy.
In any event, I come down where Charlie does in terms of the timing and the same side as Chris Springer in terms of who made the 911 call and why, if indeed, a woman called 911. If there were two calls or only one call to Wilshire and none to 911, I might have to go with Jean and revive my original idea that the call was made primarily to create a false timeline. If Fuhrman was behind the call to Wilshire there had to be more than one reason. The more “flexible” he can make a story the better he likes it especially when he can get a third party into the act.
Tracie Savage was the reporter for Channel 4 television who got her tip about Nicole’s blood on O.J.’s socks before the tests were conducted from the married LAPD sergeant she was having an affair with. Joe Bosco got the same premature information from a different source. Someone close to the investigation certainly leaked information to at least one female reporter in that instance. The same person could have done the same thing with the same reporter on the night of the 12th. I’m not saying it happened. I’m just saying that I know enough to rule it in and I don’t know enough to rule it out. --Jasper
