You ask good questions. The most interesting thing to me about this one is that both of us ran into the same dead end. However, while I was trying to find the answer, it struck me that it might not matter. Whether Shipp had a college degree or not, he appears to have gotten his knowledge about spouse abuse from the LAPD. In terms of what he LAPD required of its officers in this area, Ron Shipp was an expert.
Large police departments are quasi-military organizations. In all such organizations a body of experience points up needs for broad-based familiarization in certain areas. Experts write manuals and conduct seminars for a few interested members of the group (usually volunteers) and the most articulate ones with the most interests or the best connections get the job as teachers.
Prior education in the subject matter rarely enters into it because the intent of classes like these is just to let the students know what to look for in situation they might encounter on the job and how to respond to them. This sounds like the sort of thing Ron Shipp did as a “domestic violence” teacher at the police academy.
When O.J. pled “no contest” in the ’89 baseball bat incident, he was ordered to attend spouse abuse counseling sessions with a licensed psychotherapist. Ron Shipp allegedly “counseled” O.J. as “a friend” who knew more about the subject than O.J. did. At the time, Ron Shipp was working in Forgery. That was the last LAPD job he had before he left the force later that year.
Shipp might have been listed on the funeral program as an honorary pallbearer. You are correct. He was not one of the pallbearers in the video. –Jasper
