I don’t see how that could work unless somebody got them out of the house in the first place to supplement the missing baseball bats.
It couldn’t have been Michel, John, Tommy or their cousin Jim because they were with other people doing other things before the murders or together at Jim’s house watching Monty Python and drinking beer. John was 16 years old. Their age group (15 to 17) sounds about right to me for getting a charge out of running around smashing pumpkins on Halloween eve. The only Skakels left were Rushton Jr. 19, Julie 18, David 12, and Steven 9. If David and Steven took the clubs, why would they have taken all but ONE of Julie’s rare Toney Pennas with their dead mother’s name on them? And why would the clubs have been left ONLY in the Skakel’s backyard for someone else to clean up?
Leaving only the head of he six-iron on the murder scene and leaving ALL of the other clubs in the house would have been enough to implicate one of the Skakel boys –Michael, John or Tommy. Fingerprints of neighborhood kids on those clubs would have meant nothing unless the clubs had blood on them. If they had already been loaded into the killer’s car or Martha caught the killer loading them and he saw her, that’s different.
The testimony of Bryant’s Bronx friends could get us much closer to what happened. Even if they are as innocent as they claim to be, their testimony could bracket the time of Martha’s death in a way that gives Michael and leaves somebody without one.
I am stumped right know by the “caveman” story attributed to Tony Bryant. The truth sometimes sounds incredible, especially when it involves the actions of intoxicated teenage boys looking for forbidden thrills. If the repost of Bryant’s story is really his, I don’t think he invented it or imagined seeing and hearing something that he didn’t. The trouble is, Bryant didn’t witness the murders. If he did see his friends pick up the clubs and hear them say they were going to get a girl “caveman style,” that is awfully incriminating if they also told him two days later that they killed Martha. But if the Bronx kids told them they murdered Martha just to freak him out after what they said about getting a girl “caveman style,” they might have solid alibis for the time of death.
Time of death… That’s the rub. What was the time of death? –Jasper
