Now I have the source and the context. And now I know why I had a vague recollection of Faye telling the story about the scissors and why I wasn’t sure that she did.
As soon as I began to read Kato’s testimony, I recalled thinking what I thought the first time I read it. I thought that Kato told the truth about what Nicole told him and that he did not believe her (he urged her to get back with O.J. before and after the recorded 911 incident where Nicole claimed that O.J. broke the door.
Kato was my number one suspect at the time (followed by Shipp and O.J.) and I believed that my Fuhrman scenario was too complicated and required too many helpers with too many special qualifications to stand up. I was looking for subtle ways in which Kato could implicate O.J. with only O.J.’s word to dispute him. I found the exact opposite.
I didn’t know the context in which the scissors story came up with Eliot, but with Baker it sounded like one of many stories Nicole told him about O.J.’s abuse that Kato didn’t believe. I got the impression that he didn’t believe her version of the ’89 incident and at some point he concluded that Nicole staged her 911 call in ’93. He could have backed up what she said on the tape about O.J. breaking down the door. If he was trying to frame O.J. he would have. He didn’t. He said that the door had been previously broken and he had fixed it. He said that he didn’t see O.J. break it again. He said that Nicole “told” him that O.J. did it. O.J. said that the door was broken when he got there. If NICOLE broke the door, then Kato’s story and O.J.’s match up.
This is where I got the scissors story confused with Faye…. I concluded that Nicole really told Kato that she thought O.J. would kill her with scissors. This was clearly NOT a time that Nicole used the phrase “O.J. is going to kill me” as a figure of speech. Only Faye and Denise said that Nicole told them O.J. was going to kill her in terms that could only be taken literally. If she told Kato about the scissors, I couldn’t imagine that she wouldn’t also tell Faye and Denise or that Faye wouldn’t have mentioned it in her book. I hadn’t read Faye’s book. The fact that neither Denise nor Fay mentioned it means that the original source had to be Nicole. That’s what I wanted to know. --Jasper
