I think you are recalling the same discussion I recall. But I also recall someone saying that there was another way to get to Dana Point that bypassed the construction zones? I don’t think it was one of the regulars. I can relate to that because the route I used to take to work every morning 13 miles away appears to be going far out of my way. If you didn’t live where I live you would never dream of taking it (wrong initial direction, stoplights, stop signs etc.) Unlike many people, I rarely exceed the speed limit by more that five or six mile per hour and I STOP at stop signs. But my route shaves at least five minutes off of my drive time. When you’re only going 13 miles, five minutes is a lot.
Anyhow, you can’t compute the end time without knowing the start time. We don’t know the start time.
However, I would not disregard the ice-cream parlor guy’s estimate of the time altogether. I never heard him say anything (maybe someone else has). Maybe he didn’t say 10:30 or maybe he didn’t intend to say it.
This is where I’m coming from…
I once got into big trouble on the boards when I wrote about the time Ron left the restaurant because I wrote “10” where I meant to write “9” – or was it “9” where I meant to write “8”. Anyhow I put down the minutes the way intended to and if you look at the context you can see what I intended to put in for the hour. The ice cream guy or the person taking his statement could have done something similar. Look at it this way: He did not say 10:00, 10:15 or 10:45. He said 10:30. Perhaps the “30” part was right. It matches the low estimate of Crawford and De Bellow exactly. 8:30 would have given Lou an hour 7 minutes to make the trip. 8:25 would have given him an hour 12 minutes.
If the man insisted that the 10:30 time is correct (which it couldn’t be) or he said something else that only a crackpot would say you have to discount him. But if he said something, about Rachel perhaps, that the police, the prosecutors or the individual taking the report didn’t want to be taken seriously, the easiest way to discredit him would have been to write down 10:30 whether he said it or not. –Jasper
