It wasn't questioned because it was not known. Until Fred Goldman's depo which had limited reading in the press I am sure (or there would have been more stories about it--unless there was a effort to hide any wrong doings of the Goldman's such as with hiding the Marvin Glass business)
And it took careful reading to see that the keys Ron had were keys to nowhere.
MOST took as FACT that the keys found in the scene were the car keys/apartment keys, etc.
If the evidence list in Vannatter's book is correct, the fact they just listed a set of keys (not how many or a description of them) is gross misconduct of police policies and how things are done.
For example if a wallet is found. It should say a black (the color) man's wallet with such and such brand name with distingushing features. Approx size and any other IDing remarks about it. It should say exactly what it contained, credit cards, amt. of money, etc.
Just writing down a set of keys--just doesn't get it.
It is like finding a gun or knife in the scene and just writing down a gun or knife without a description of it.
