The man refused to set the time prior to 10:30 before the police told him that Nicole was dead before 10:30. Using memory cues like the ones you mentioned (which I believe he did) I’m sure he couldn’t imagine how he could have been off by that much. 9:00 gets him much closer to 10:30 than 8:30.
He thought that the man he saw was with Nicole but he wasn’t sure. I’ll bet that he remembered the man because the man was white, Nicole was white and the kids were mixed. They could have come in around the same time and the man could have left shortly before or after they did without buying anything. I think that Nicole and the kids made a bigger impression on the clerk than anything else, especially the time. I’ll also bet that something happed at 10:30 that cause him to make a strong association with Nicole and her kids. –Jasper
