Charlie,
The phone records gave me fits all along because of how spotty they were combined with the fact that I simply do not understand telephone billing. I don’t understand the capabilities and limitations of cell phones (1994 limitations and capabilities in California) or the difference between functions and billing for line phones, portable phones and cell phones. I didn’t even know there was a difference between portable phones and cell phones until John Junot informed me (in his special way) in 2000 or 2001.
Juditha Brown’s private home phone bill never made sense to me as a complete record of her calls on the 12th and 13th. How many separate phone lines were in that household? Who called Nicole’s half sister in Arizona? Who called Juditha’s family in Germany? Whose phone did they use? Did Lou have a portable phone and/or cell phone for his business? Did Juditha have one for hers? Did Tonya and Denise have their own private phone lines? What home numbers were used for the beach house in Laguna Beach?
What about individual cell phones and portable phones (with portable numbers)? Paula Barbieri had a LA area code phone number that O.J. called when she was in Florida and Nevada. Did Juditha make any of her calls with a portable phone?
How can anyone know who placed what call from which phone lines unless there is conformation on the bill where the call originated and conformation on the receiving end of the call about who made it. That’s what we have with the 9:37 call. Juditha’s phone bill says someone called Mezzaluna from that extension at 9:37and Karen Crawford’s testimony that she recognized Juditha’s voice (not likely confused with Tonya).
On the other hand, nobody presented a speck of evidence that Juditha talked to Nicole at 10:40. All we know is that somebody used Juditha’s line to call Nicole’s number at 10:40. We know that the call was completed and that it lasted LESS THAN two minutes. She could have gotten an anwsering machine. As Lollie pointed out, the call could have lasted only a few minutes past 10:41 to count as a two-minute call. This is why I said many moons ago that I didn’t believe Juditha talked to Nicole at all until 10:17 and Nicole’s call to Mezzaluna at 9:45 had nothing to do with the Juditha’s 10:40 call to Nicole. You will note that in the preliminary hearing, Crawford said that Nicole called Mezzaluna to ask about the glasses but in the criminal trial she said Nicole asked to speak to Ron, period.
Is it possible that Lou made it home in time for Juditha to make the 10:37 call to Mezzaluna? I think it is possible. I am convinced that Juditha made the call. But I am starting to swing back to my old position that she made the call from a cell phone in the jeep – or a portable phone with a portable number. I’m beginning to think that Juditha’s phone records that were presented as her home records were really her BUSINESS line phone records and the 10:17 call was made on the PRIVATE line. I’d like to see what other calls were made on that line. A call to Dominique would be very interesting. --Jasper
