The standing around outside the Mezz is important--the quotes were just people and the child who said that it was the last time she had seen Sydney.
The fact that Sydney and Justin were playing around outside while the adults were talking appears to imply that Nicole did not immediately go to Ben and Jerry's after leaving out the front door of the Mezz.
The article was saying that the people they were talking to were other people who had attended the recital but weren't in their immediate group. Judy ALWAYS said that they went with "friends and family" to the Mezz yet the list given was ALL family--none of these friends she was forever mentioning. I'd bet that more than the Browns went to the Mezz after the recital. I'd say other family groups went as well and sat at other tables.
I'd liken it to what you always hear about that after the children's ballgame all the kids and parents going to the same pizza place to celebrate. They are there separately but together.
This little confab outside could have lasted anywehre from 5 to 15 minutes--just depending. They could have been taking turns being picked up out front. Someone mentioned a valet service but I have never heard for sure that was such a thing.
And I'd say one group after another had the "driver" go over to the parking lot to get the car and come back to the front of the Mezz and load up the car.
