In the Murder in Greenwich movie you will find figurative expressions that have literal meanings and literal scenes that have figurative meanings. The symbolism is what counts.
The biggest thing for me was Fuhrman’s 22-day suspension without pay over a racist incident involving a CALENDAR and the assassinated black leader Martin Luther KING in Chicago. Figuratively speaking, that was money out of Fuhrman’s pocket. Now consider the coins that Fuhrman said was literally money out of the killer’s pocket. On Fuhrman’s watch, the coins moved and changed from 22 cents to 11 cents or vice versa.
The penny connection to the Lincoln assassination is obvious.
The dime gives you Franklin D. Roosevelt. FDR was the target of an assassination attempt in Miami by an unemployed Italian immigrant named Guiseppe Zangara on February 15, 1933. Zangara was upset because he had LOST MONEY on dog races. He also said that since he was a teenager he wanted to kill a KING.
The bullet intended for Roosevelt fatally wounded Chicago’s Mayor Anton Cermak instead who was riding in convertible with Roosevelt when FDR stopped to give a speech. Zangara fired five shots in all. Before anyone realized what was really happening, a photographer joked to Cermak, “Just like Chicago, eh, Mayor?” O.J. was in Chicago when the coins on Bundy were photographed. The only person on the Bundy murder scene directly involved in shooting a human being was Mark Fuhrman.
I didn’t make much of the first reference to 22 in the Murder in the Greenwich movie until I noticed the month on the CALENDAR in the probation office where the words, “22 years later” are superimposed. In the book Fuhrman got permission to leave the state in September. In the movie, it’s October, the month that Martha ELIZABETH Moxley was murdered (massive injury to the head). That’s when I was sure that the changes in the coins that produced separate photos of 11 cents and 22 cents symbolized the day that John F. Kennedy was shot to death in a Lincoln convertible shortly after flying into Love Field. The picture on the probation office calendar features a pair of handcuffs and two revolvers. JFK’s assassin allegedly killed a cop with a revolver and Jack Ruby killed the accused assassin with a revolver. Ruby’s victim was wearing handcuffs.
When I was writing the Twenty Two chapter in The Smoking Gun I looked for a direct Chicago link in the Twilight Zone episode that I didn’t find. I hadn’t made the Roosevelt-Cermak connection to Miami. This time when I saw “Twenty Two” I did see it. Zangara sent five people to the hospital in Miami, including a woman. In “Twenty Two” ELIZABETH Powell makes a figurative reference to a “dime” when she is in the hospital. When she leaves, the ticket she buys at the airport for flight 22 is nonstop to Miami.
