Mark Fuhrman’s Murder in Spokane was a big eye-opener. I didn’t read the book to learn about the murders. I read it to learn more about Fuhrman for The Smoking Gun 3. Sure enough, where I speculated about some of the symbolism and name association in his Murder in Greenwich movie, he supplied the evidence. Again and again he made reference to the Spokane serial murders that that were completely irrelevant to the case but fill right in line with what I said about him getting his ideas from the movies.
At one point he went into detail about a young prostitute named Teresa who was found floating in a river. Cause of death – blunt impact injury to head. The killer, a former Army helicopter pilot confessed to twelve murders. All of them were shot to death. The victims included one man. After spending more than a page taking about Teresa (pages 49-50) and mentioning another prostitute found floating in a river he immediately started talking about a victim (page 50-53) who had been found elsewhere with a white plastic bag around her head. Her last name was Palmer.
If you read what I wrote in The Smoking Gun about Twin Peaks, you know where I’m gong with this…
I was thinking “Bob” all the way. Bob was the evil alter ego of an incestuous father named Leland Palmer. He left a letter of the alphabet under a fingernail of each of his victims. When they were put together they spelled the name Robert. In the 1992 prequel to Twin Peaks called Fire Walk With Me, the first victim of the killer is found floating in a river. Her whole body is wrapped in white plastic. Fire Walk With Me ends where Twin Peaks begins, with the body of Leland Palmer’s prostitute daughter lying on a beach wrapped in clear plastic.
In Murder in Spokane, the killer’s name was Robert Yates. It looks like Yates was also “inspired” by Twin Peaks.
In Whore (1991) Theresa Russell plays the title role. In Fuhrman’s Murder in Greenwich movie a character he events called Hildy Southerlyn is played by Theresa Holloway.
Is there more in Murder in Spokane that merits special attention? You bet. Miss Marple was right. There is tons of it. –Jasper
