One other telling thing about the staging of the Moxley murder that Fuhrman DIDN’T see was the convenient match-up of the rare Toney Penna 6-iron golf club head on the murder scene to the 5-iron that the police found in the Skakel home.
In the book he lays out the basic facts of the case (with the old Fuhrman spin, of course) and makes it clear that the Greenwich detectives found only one matching club conveniently located in a storage bin. Apparently they didn’t even have to open a door to see it. All of the other irons from the set were missing (remember Kin Littleton the thief whose name was changed in the movie to Morris Banks?).
Rushton Skakel had a set of Toney Penna woods in a bag of miscellanies clubs (page 116) “…used by family members for walking sticks and to ‘whale golf balls’ in the backyard.” Golf clubs in general were thus uniquely associated with the Skakel family before the murders and the Skalels owned the only set of Toney Pennas in Bell Haven.
The killer took the time to move Martha’s body at least twenty minutest after the initial attack, to stab her in the throat with a broken piece of the 6-iron shift and to pose her body (Foster, Nicole) in a suggestive way. Yet, the killer left the head of the club on the murder scene. In the movie the Toney Penna name on the bloody 6-iron was sitting right where it could be read without having to turn it over. The scene reminded me of the package with O.J.’s company name on it that Fuhrman and Vannatter saw staring right at them in the storage compartment of the Bronco.
I realize that the director could have shown the Toney Penna side of the club for dramatic effect but I also wonder why the producers wouldn’t have stuck as closely as possible to the facts in that particular instance. I have a sneaking suspicion that they did get that one right. I also suspect that the subsequent shot of detectives finding a complete set of Toney Penna clubs in a bag next the Skakel stairway was deliberately altered from the facts just as some of the names and situations were change to blur the edges of fact and fiction. –Jasper
