Comments Dick Wagner has posted an article on his site called "Petrocelli's Goofy Idea". The article has pictures of the Salinger's carport behind Kato's wall.
Jasper- you may want to look at these for how yo idea of a golf club hitting the wall back there would fit. There certainly is very little room behind the carport.

From the angles at which the photos are taken, the hedges and trees seem to form a solid, impenetrable barrier. If you looked at trees from those angles spaced ten feet apart they would also appear to form a solid, impenetrable barrier. A man reaching over the fence at that point to jab at the wall with a golf club would need less than one foot of space to reach the fence without leaving telltale evidence of his presence.
You have to look at the dark vertical lines in the hedgerows and the trees (figures 2 and 3). These are the brakes in the foliage. Unfortunately, there are no photos near the carport taken from anywhere close to a right angle, which is what you need to get a good measurement. However, the spacing is fairly even all along the fence and in figure 4, where the reporter stands on O.J.s south pathway just beyond the far edge of the carport, you can see daylight between the branches even at that extreme camera angle.
Going over the fence and getting to it are two different propositions. Wagner has given an excellent account of why any story of O.J. jumping the fence at a point opposite the sound of the thumps is absurd. A man standing sideway at the fence between the hedges and angling a golf club slightly to hit that point fits Katos testimony, Rosas testimony, the missing club and the physical evidence. A man Ron Shipps size could easily slip into a 10-inch gap on the near side of the carport (judging from the spacing, there should be a small gap right there). This makes the location for the action I described ideal. Jasper
