You may have been reading my mind – again. I don’t know how you happened to be writing about A Killing Affair at the same time I was watching it on tape. It could be as simple as the fact that we were following the same string of associations on the discussion board. But the Napoleon thing throws me. I did not get there the way you did.
It just happens that the tip you gave me a long time ago about The Caddy with Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin also led me to Napoleon because of something I saw in another movie http://www.smartfellowspress.com/smokinggun/smokinggun2/Play.html . At that time I was looking for a pizza connection and looking only at the Bundy murders. You will note, however, that Once Upon a Crime leads directly to Kathleen Turner in Crimes of Passion, which flows into Vibes with Bill McCutcheon. He plays the man who is killed by a blow to the head with a golf club in Mr. Destiny with James Belushi. James Belushi also stars in Once Upon a Crime. From there the relevant links took me to a series of sexual “French connections” with Kathleen Turner and THERESA Russell.
Murder in Greenwich makes an explicit reference to The French Connection movie. It also makes symbolic sexual “French connections to” Maggie Grace as Martha and a fictional character called Hildy Southerlyn played by THERESA Healey.
This time I was looking for a gold dog tag connection in Once Upon a Crime to a gold nametag on a fictional “moonlighting” cop in Murder in Greenwich played by an actor name BRUCE Hopkins. One of the stars of Once Upon a Crime was Cybill Shepherd. She starred with BRUCE Willis in the popular 1980s TV series Moonlighting http://www.smartfellowspress.com/smokinggun/David-1html.htm . You will find references to Moonlighting in several chapters of The Smoking Gun.
Oh, I forgot the most important thing. Once Upon a Crime involves two hapless Americans in Rome who find a rich Monte Carlo woman’s dog. The dog has a gold tag. and there is a big cash reward for his return. The dog’s name is Napoleon. --Jasper
